Teens Turn Away From Facebook, Head To YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat

In 2018, 51 percent of teens say they use Facebook, and three other platforms have taken hold of the sizable majority of users - YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat.

However, the survey does not provide a clear picture of what apps teens actually use more as it does not include the instant messaging apps like iMessage and Whatsapp.

The popularity of Facebook is considerably higher among children from families with low income.

33% of male teens used Youtube more than females (16%), while females used Snapchat and Instagram more heavily than their male counterparts.

YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat have emerged as the most popular online hangouts for US teens, surpassing the once-dominant Facebook.

16-17yrs were more likely to use Facebook, Messenger, and Tumblr than those aged 14-15yr olds, highlighting the generational differences emerging within the platforms. There has even been a sharper decline of teens who regarded the social networking media as their frequently used social platform, from forty-one percent in the year 2015 to ten percent at the present.

The latest survey only indicated that Facebook has a teen issue.

Pew also says 95 per cent of teens now have a smartphone or access to one, up from 73 per cent during the prior survey. In February this year, an eMarketer study estimated that Facebook's user base among Americans aged 12-17 declined by 9.9% in 2017 - nearly three times greater than the same research firm had predicted in August of 2017. Also, respondents were asked to categorically state whether they use each of the platforms or not in the previous survey.

The survey showed a split over the impact of social media on the lives of the teens.

As Facebook's popularity dropped by around 20 percentage points in the last three years, both Snapchat and Instagram grew at a similar rate.

The survey comes right after what is probably the most visible example of how teens use social media to date: the viral response to the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

"These mobile connections are in turn fueling more-persistent online activities: 45% of teens now say they are online on a near-constant basis".
