Texas boy spells 'koinonia' correctly, wins Scripps National Spelling Bee

Karthik Nemmani, 14, from McKinney, Texas, smiles as he wins the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, May 31, 2018.

His opening came in Round 17 when Naysa Modi, 12, a seventh-grader from the neighboring suburb of Frisco, misplaced an s in "Bewusstseinslage" (defined as "a state of consciousness or a feeling devoid of sensory components"). "Nilla Rajan (bottom center) celebrates as another competitor gets her words right and Brody Dicks (bottom left) racks his brains to correctly spell 'caudation" correctly.

More than a dozen former champions were in the audience, including 1985 victor Balu Natarajan, whose son, Atman Balakrishnan, 12, made it to the third round of competition on Wednesday.

Her close friend, Jashun Paluru of West Lafayette, Indiana, finished fourth, spelling with flair and spending most of his time in between words chatting animatedly with Naysa.

Third place contestant, Abhijay Kodali, is also from Texas.

Of note, however: All five spellers who scored the highest on the test were among the 16 finalists.

Weinman's lawyer, Stephen Dicht, said after viewing the body cam videos, "I don't think it puts the police in a good light". At this point Weiman says she "tripped and fell and the cop tackled me to the ground and smashed my head into the sand".

"I had confidence, but I didn't think it would really happen", Nemmani was quoted as saying by The Dallas Morning News, of his win.

The expanded field also forced several logistical changes, such as an extra day of onstage spelling this week.

The dramatic final rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee are set to begin.

And they were calling to say that Reagan had been reinstated - only the fifth speller to be restored to the competition after an apparent misspelling in the last 20 years.

There were a total of 516 children who qualified for the nationals this year. She'll be in eighth grade, which is the final school year that spellers are eligible. It was the top "how to spell" word in 11 states.

Not only do kids from every state in the US compete, a number of other countries send their brightest young spellers.

Yet amid the bigger Bee, returning spellers continued their dominance, even though a first-time competitor won.
