Trump's family separation policy has GOP panicking about 2018

Elon Musk has waded into the ongoing political controversy about family separations, offering to help children stranded at the US-Mexico border.

Anastasia Tonello, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association said the detention of families - parents and children - who pose no flight risk or danger to the community is simply "unacceptable, abrogates worldwide responsibilities to refugees, and goes against our country's most fundamental values".

On a simple flier printed in Spanish and English, the Trump administration now provides migrant parents who cross into the United States illegally with a step-by-step guide explaining what to do after they have been separated from their children. Orrin Hatch of Utah, wrote the Trump administration asking it to pause the separation of immigrant families until Congress comes up with a solution. Trump officials could not say how many of those children have been reunited with their mothers and fathers.

Others have criticized the policy but not the President or the administration, instead pointing blame at Washington inaction on immigration in general.

"We need you, those children need you -and I am talking directly to my Republican colleagues- we need you to stand up to President Donald Trump", he said.

While Mr Trump held firm to his tough immigration stance in an earlier appearance on Tuesday, he acknowledged during the closed-door meeting that the coverage of family separations is taking a toll. She said the number of adults and children arriving at the border who fraudulently claimed to be a family group rose 314 percent between October 2017 and February, without specifying the number of cases.

Speaker Paul Ryan is pushing ahead with votes on rival House GOP immigration bills, but neither appears to have enough support for passage, forcing the Trump administration to consider executive action to stem the crisis of family separations at the border.

The policy had led to a spike in family separations in recent weeks, with more than 2,300 minors separated from their families at the border from May 5 through June 9, according to Homeland Security.

"Right now we're focused on getting this bill passed", he said.

The effort would mark a dramatic turnaround for an administration that has been insisting, wrongly, that it has no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of the law and a court decision.

She wrote on social media at the time: "We'll be joining the many parents out there who wear two hats". Ms Ardern assured she would still be on call, and the government would be business as usual.

Trump had tweeted earlier Wednesday that he was "working on something", once again blaming Democrats for refusing to support Republican legislation created to keep families detained together after they're arrested at the border.

Trump then accused rival Democrats of putting "illegal immigrants before they put American citizens".

Every day, child welfare agencies across America make hard decisions to separate children from their parents.

He says the compromise bill negotiated between Republican conservatives and moderates "is Plan B". The policy had prompted protests and outrage around the country.

The order does not end the "zero-tolerance" policy that criminally prosecutes all adults caught crossing the border illegally. "Really appreciate your backing us over the years".

"We want a country with heart. Clearly the president is hearing the uproar from our communities", said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif.

Cruz's bill would double the number of federal immigration judges, authorize new temporary shelters to house migrant families and limit the processing of asylum cases to no more than 14 days - a goal immigrant advocates say would be hard to meet. Theirs is narrow legislation proposed by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas that would allow detained families to stay together in custody while expediting their deportation proceedings.

Peter Schey, class-appointed counsel in the Flores case, said Wednesday there was nothing in the agreement that prevents Homeland Security officials from detaining children with their parents, "as long as the conditions of detention are humane and the child remains eligible for release, unless the child is a flight risk, or a danger to herself or others, or the child's parent does not wish the child to be released".

It contains several of Trump's main priorities, including border wall funding, protecting young "Dreamer" immigrants who were brought to the country as children and curbs on legal immigration programs such as an end to the visa lottery.
