United States special forces soldier killed, 4 wounded in Somalia attack

A USA military official confirmed the attack in the country's south, about 50 kilometers (32 miles) north of the port city of Kismayo, killed one us troop and wounded four others.

A US special operations soldier was killed in Somalia on Friday and four other USA service members were wounded, marking the first time an American has died in action in Africa since four USA soldiers were killed in an ambush in Niger late a year ago.

"During an operation June 8, 2018, in Jubaland, Somalia, one U.S. Special Operations member was killed and four U.S. service members and one partner force was wounded as the result of an enemy attack", U.S. Africa Command (Africom) said in a statement.

The Pentagon is withholding the name of the fallen soldier pending next of kin notification.

"This area is called Sanguni, we came here to carry out a special operation created to liberate this area that is still under the control of al-Shabab fighters", Lt. Col. Abdi Ibrahim with the Somali armed forces said Friday. The offensive was meant to seize a large chunk of territory now controlled by al-Shabaab militants and establish a "permanent combat outpost". The U.S. provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission, the statement said.

County Managing Director Wil Okabe said his own vacation home in Kapoho Beach Lots was also threatened by lava . And it not only took homes, it completely filled Kapoho Bay , extending.8 miles from the coastline.

The Defense Department says a 26-year-old soldier from Arizona has died from wounds suffered in Somalia. The fourth received sufficient medical care on the scene. The attack marks the first known combat death of a United States service member in Africa since the October 4 ambush of U.S. and Nigerien forces which claimed the lives of four American troops and five Nigeriens. They were awaiting transport "for additional medical evaluation".

The US troops were on a training mission with local Somali and Kenyan forces when the attack occurred.

US President Donald Trump offered his "thoughts and prayers" to those killed and wounded.

In 2011, the armed group was pushed out of the capital, Mogadishu, by Somali troops backed by hundreds of soldiers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) after months of deadly street battles. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.
