AG sues to bar online 3D printer gun plans

Ferguson asked for a temporary restraining order to block Defense Distributed plans to begin publishing 3D-gun blueprints online August 1.

"This unprecedented move is not only disastrous for public safety, but undermines our state laws meant to keep firearms out of the hands of unsafe individuals", Ferguson said.

Defense Distributed has agreed not to allow its websites to be accessed from Pennsylvania.

On Sunday Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro sought a Temporary Restraining Order to hinder Wilson's ability to post files online, but a judge rejected Shapiro's arguments.

"We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that people can't just print a deadly weapon on a whim", he wrote.

The lawsuit was filed after the federal government quietly settled with Wilson on a case that effectively makes it legal to share the controversial files online. "Honestly, it's kind of sad".

1,000 people already downloaded 3D plans for AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifles by Sunday.

In 2013, the designer, Cody Wilson, who is also a gun activist, posted the plans online, only to have the government tell him to take them down, arguing the plans could violate global traffic in arms regulations. "The federal government has to essentially show their work before making a decision like this that impacts our society to such a degree".

Twitter shares plunge 20.5 percent
Twitter shares had more than doubled over the past year as it showed signs of sustaining profitability after years of losses. Chief executive Jack Dorsey said that Twitter prioritises the long-term health of the platform over short-term metrics.

But blueprints for nine types of gun were uploaded to the Defense Distributed website on Friday.

"If a person has a printed gun that is made of the right materials they will be undetectable and everyone sitting on an airplane will be put at risk", Durkan said.

Gun control activists and law enforcement officials fear that criminals seeking guns will be able to bypass background checks, skirt age restrictions and ignore gun licensing rules.

The Trump administration is being sued for allowing plans for 3D-printed guns to be published online. On Capitol Hill, two Democratic congressman, Reps. However, even coarsely plastic 3D-printed firearms, sometimes combined with other more easily manufactured or purchased elements, can produce weapons likely to harm the shooter that are capable of firing a projectile at least once.

A settlement was recently reached, allowing Wilson to legally repost his blueprints for anyone on the internet to download.

The LA's Attorney's Office and the New Jersey District Attorney's Office did not return AmmoLand's request for comments at the time of publication.

In the 16-page filing, attorneys for DefDist hold that Grewal and Feuer "have waged an ideologically-fueled program of intimidation and harassment against" the company, intending to drag Wilson "before all manner of far-flung criminal and civil tribunals in an effort to silence the organization".

Wilson, Defense Distributed and the Second Amendment Foundation have by contrast maintained that this is a First Amendment case, claiming that the government's attempts to block the publication of the information on the web amounts to prior restraint barred by Supreme Court precedent.
