Aussie heroes 'humbled' after cave rescue

Some of the boys recorded messages of thanks to the people who rescued them, and to the world.

"When they tried again the water was up to their chests".

Jessada said the boys were under the close watch of psychiatrists and psychologists when informed of the news about Saman.

All will be discharged from hospital in the northern town of Chiang Rai on Thursday, he said.

Dr Harris described the operation as a "pretty unbelievable experience". Thank you heavy [a lot].

The Australian team in Thailand also included Dr Harris's West Australian dive partner, six Australian Federal Police divers, a Navy clearance diver and members of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Crisis Rescue Team.

He explained local, and British divers who Dr Harris described as "the awesome foursome", had already laid terrific groundwork to ensure the success of the gruelling mission.

Adul Samon, a stateless 14-year-old sent to Thailand for schooling by his ethnic minority parents across the border in Myanmar, spoke in Thai and then in English: "Hello, I am Adul".

Doctor Richard Harris touched down in Adelaide on Friday night, just days after helping complete the marathon mission.

Doctors say they are in good health following a successful three-day operation which ended July 10 when teams of Thai Navy SEALs and global cave diving experts hauled the last five members of the team to safety.

The coach also dug them into the muddy wall to keep warm and sleep. The success of the rescue operation has even stunned its architects - expert divers who battled muddy, rushing floodwaters for days to reach the group and eventually extract them.

Adul is perhaps the best known of the boys because he was the one speaking English in the video taken inside the cave when the team members were first found by two British cave divers July 2, almost 10 days after being trapped by flooding.

Thousands of people have called for Dr Harris and Mr Challen to be given the Cross of Valour, the nation's highest civilian bravery award.

An unnamed source said "Although it's early days and they haven't been together for long, Rick is absolutely besotted with Amp". One Thai Navy SEAL died trying to save the group.

Chris Jewell, another British diver who travelled to Thailand with Mallinson to help, gave credit to the "brave" children who "showed no signs of panic" as he gently pushed them under the surface of the water in the cave system and guided them through the dark to safety.

The media-shy 53-year-old was hailed for an ingenious medical idea that helped the trapped boys stay calm during the gruelling 1.7km swim to the surface.

"We told them about the death of Navy Seal Kunan as part of the process of preparing the boys to go back home and to lead normal lives".
