Israeli parliament passes contentious Jewish nation bill

The bill, which also states that Al Quds is the capital of Israel, not only encourages illegal settlements, but also flagrantly violates all worldwide laws and United Nations resolutions, especially those which criminalise Israeli settlements and call for cessation of violence against Palestinians.

"With the full backing of the Trump administration, the Netanyahu government shamelessly seeks to legalize occupation and antagonize the entire Muslim world", Kalin wrote in his column.

Egypt condemned on Saturday Israel for its adoption of the controversial "nation-state" law, saying it undermines the chances for peace in the Middle East and consecrates discrimination.

The bill designates the state of Israel as the national home of the Jewish people, Jerusalem as its capital and Hebrew as its official language.

He also called on the Palestinians and Arab countries "to stick together for the national interest to prevent the transformation of the deal of the century, which has slowed down but did not end, into a regional deal whose consequences can not be predicted".

The Nation-State law establishes that racist and discriminatory practices against Palestinians and non-Jews are legal.

I still believe that, despite all the difficulties, objective and subjective, the future of Israel and its position in the family of enlightened nations depend upon our ability to realise the promise of the founding fathers as they enshrined it in the Israeli declaration of independence.

The law also defines the establishment of Jewish communities as being in the national interest and downgrades Arabic from an official language to one with special status. Erdogan has called for a summit of Muslim leaders twice in the past six months after U.S. President Donald Trump made a decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

It is imperative that the global community forces the Jewish state to rescind its latest racist legislation.

DANIEL ESTRIN, BYLINE: It may seem odd that Israel passed this foundational law 70 years after the country was founded.

"We have joined forces across across party lines because this is an extremist move by the government against Arabic speakers, and continues the discrimination against Druze settlements and minorities, which is now anchored in a Basic Law", MK Salah Sa'ad of the center-left Zionist Union's Labor faction told the Ynet news site. "The Arabs, I understand, want a binational state and don't want to recognize Israel as the Homeland of the Jewish people".

The law has drawn a barrage of condemnation both in Israel and internationally.

Jihad Harb, a political science lecturer at Ramallah's Birzeit University, says the law will surely derail any potential peace deal with the Palestinians.

"Israel does stand for justice, equality and human rights, but this clause makes the statement that we are officially in favor of Jewish segregation".
