Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years in jail in corruption case

The verdict in the Avenfield reference case was read out by accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir after postponing the announcement four times in a day.

Sharif's nemesis Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) said even before verdict that Sharif will be sent to jail due to his corruption, as he accused him of using illness of his wife Kulsoom as "emotional blackmail".

Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz was sentenced to seven years in prison while her husband Captain (retd) Safdar was given one-year jail in the case filed by the National Accountability Bureau, Dawn online reported.

Sharif's political opponents hailed the verdict, saying it was the beginning of real "accountability of thieves". Already PML-N has faced mass desertions with some of Nawaz's long-time allies also jumping ship.

"We are still deliberating the appeal option but I feel we should take it", said Senator Mushahid Ullah Khan, former federal minister and PML-N spokesperson.

The PML-N sweeps back to power in an election the gives its allies a solid National Assembly majority.

In 2015 Panama Papers leak revealed that Nawaz Sharif's children had links with foreign companies, that were being used to channel funds and buy foreign flats, including these flats in Avenfield in UK.

October 28, 2016 - Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan threatens to paralyse the capital, Islamabad, with a "lockdown" of street protests unless demands for an independent investigation into the Panama revelations are met. Sharif denies any wrongdoing. Imran Khan backs down from lockdown threat.

He said he would continue his political struggle from behind bars if necessary, and urged the people to "break the chains by exercising their right to vote on July 25". Maryam was also convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison.

Since then, matters have only gone further south for Sharif, whom authorities have sought to arrest and have banned for life from public office.
