New Zealand repeat as Women's Rugby World Cup champions

The English battled to a 19-15 win over Samoa to advance to the last eight.

France had been the surprise package in the women's draw, but New Zealand were always the favourites going into the final and they showed why with a dominant display to win the gold.

England needed an extra-time win over hosts United States of America to set up a semifinal clash with South Africa who thrashed Scotland 36-5.

The other semi-final is between Olympic champions Fiji and defending World champions New Zealand. France advanced to the semi-finals after beating Canada 24-19.

The Ireland women's team wrapped up a hugely successful showing at the Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament, finishing in sixth place after a 12-7 defeat to Spain.

Eagles superstar Perry Baker, who had written in his exclusive tournament preview for ESPN that he believed the hosts could win the trophy and that "the sky is the limit for rugby in America", scored two tries while Martin Iosefo, Danny Barrett and Carlin Isles also touched down in the final game of the day.

"The guys on my inside did all the work".

"If you look our team, we got speedsters but we also got people who are just plowing through people", Tapper said.

"We're pretty frustrated with the way we played, but knockout footy, who cares?" But the coaches decided on a training session earlier in the day and that helped us prepare, so we were ready for Ireland.

The second half saw the Blitzboks picking up from where they left off as they won possession from the Irish kick-off and the livewire Werner Kok scored after a barging run down the left-hand flank.

While being a Fiji supporter in recent years has certainly not been tough, they have had their share of disappointment in 2018.

France tackled ferociously in an attempt to pin the New Zealand women back in their own half but soon found themselves another try down when captain Sarah Goss broke clear and swept forward in an attack capped by Portia Woodman's try in the corner. The Black Ferns were made to fight all the way in beating the United States of America in the semi-finals and the final proved a stroll by comparison.
