Don't 'monkey this up' and elect Andrew Gillum, Ron DeSantis says

"That's not going to be good for Florida". Gillum would be Florida's first African-American governor.

Florida elections are always competitive, and this is a guy who, although he's much too liberal for Florida, I think he's got huge problems with how he's governed Tallahassee, you know, he is an articulate spokesman for those far-left views, and he's a charismatic candidate. "That is not going to work".

"Miami was shortlisted as we're competing in this contest (for Amazon's new headquarters)", Gillum said.

Smith also read from a statement in which DeSantis' campaign suggested it was "absurd" to characterize the candidate's remarks as racist. He warned voters not to "monkey this up", and then critics quickly slammed his comment as racist, since his opponent is an African-American. "DeSantis can do the bidding of big business and big lobbyists and Donald Trump and his divisive rhetoric".

Among registered voters, 60 percent of Democrats said they were "very interested" in the midterms in the August survey from Franklin & Marshall College.

State Rep. Byron Donalds, the only black Republican in the state legislature, said DeSantis' comment was not racist and the debate around it is an "unfortunate distraction".

"He's an extreme talent", Trump said of DeSantis.

Trump has lavishly praised DeSantis, one of his most reliable TV defenders, and slammed Gillum as "a failed Socialist Mayor".

The stadium then cut the lights so that the thousands in attendance could pay homage to the legend and innovator. Detroit's Swanson Funeral Home owns the two-door LaSalle, buying it the year the funeral home began.

Gillum clearly isn't stressed about Trump, he coolly responded back on Twitter with, "What our state and country needs is decency, hope, and leadership".

Gillum would become the state's first black governor if he were to win in November.

Gillum has embraced a "Medicare-for-all" health-care system and has said the government should "abolish ICE in its current form".

The Florida race now stands as a national test for the base of each major party - as well as of Trump's swaying power. "Floridians want a leader who will bring them together; Ron DeSantis has shown that he would only divide Florida". The Democratic Governors Association and other political groups also levied criticism.

"It's disgusting that Ron DeSantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles", Rizzo wrote on Twitter.

Stephen Lawson, a DeSantis spokesman, later said that any characterizations of racism were unwarranted.

Gillum's winning the Democratic nomination, on the other hand, came as a surprise.
