Independence Day releases ‘Gold’, ‘Satyameva Jayate’ storm the box office

The movie enjoyed an extended weekend of 5 days.

Akshay Kumar-starrer sports drama maintained its edge over John Abraham's anti-corruption cop saga on its fourth day on Friday, August 18. However, both the films managed to hold their grip on the box office till the weekend. Combined biz is approx ₹ 125 cr nett [+/-].

Taran Adarsh feels that there might be a record-in-the-making for both the movies, courtesy a five day extended weekend.

"The big Independence Day holiday results in big numbers at the box office", tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh. "Ironically, approximately one-third business [of Rs 125 crore] was accumulated on Independence Day alone", he wrote.

While Gold collected a whopping Rs 25.25 Crore at the box office on the first day of its release, Satyameva Jayate was not far behind, as it collected Rs 20.56 Crore at the box office on the first day as well.

John Abraham starrer Satyameva Jayate is giving good competition to Akshay Kumar's Gold despite the clash. It also has become the highest opening grosser of Akshay Kumar at the box office.

Set at the backdrop of India winning its first gold medal in hockey as a free nation in the 1948 Summer Olympics, the film promises to be yet another big one from Akki. The movie features John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Amruta Khanvilkar and Aisha Sharma in lead roles. On Day 5, Reema Kagti-directed Gold has scored Rs 15.55 crore, pushing its total to Rs 71.30 crore.
