Trump thanks North Korea's Kim for handing over war remains

They were received by Vice President Mike Pence during a solemn ceremony in Hawaii.

The talks were meaningful in "creating understanding" in ways to implement the summit agreement, said Kim Do-gyun, the South's chief negotiator who is in charge of North Korea policy at the ministry.

The memorial was attended by Vice President Mike Pence, his wife and two individuals who had lost their fathers during the Korean War.

"Our science has also improved exponentially in recent years, so our DNA analysts can now make a more complete identification with less DNA", she said, "which does help offset the age of some of the remains". The troops carefully set each box on risers inside a hangar as Pence stood watching with his hand over his heart.

Other countries under the command of the United Nations also have troops that are still unaccounted for, including the UK, Australia and Canada.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that new images indicate North Korea has begun dismantling "a key missile site" - a step he says was promised by dictator Kim Jong Un after the two leaders met in Singapore last month.

The remains were retrieved by a US military aircraft from a seaside city in North Korea and brought to Osan Air Base outside of Seoul.

When North Korea handed over 55 boxes of bones it claimed are the remains of America's soldiers, it provided only one military dog tag and no other information to help USA forensic analysts to determine identities.

North Korea's intention was to deceive the U.S.by misconstruing the number of warheads as well as research facilities they have, while claiming they have fully denuclearised, the Post reported, citing intelligence.

According to a report by Associated Press, there are 7,699 U.S. service members listed as unaccounted for from the 1950-53 Korean War, of which about 5,300 are believed to have died on the North Korean soil. Kim committed in a broad summit statement to work toward denuclearization, but Pyong-yang has offered no details as to how it might go about that and subsequent talks have not gone smoothly.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, and lasted until an armistice was reached on July 27, 1953.

At a Senate hearing last week, Pompeo refuted claims that the US was being played by North Korea.

Once the boxes are in DPAA custody, the first step will be to inventory them to determine whether the remains are those of Americans, Duus said.

Mr Pompeo said last week that North Korea was continuing to produce fuel for nuclear bombs.

On the issue of sanctions, however, Trump has been adamant, stressing on numerous occasions that North Korea should not expect an easing of restrictions any time soon.

The senior State Department official, speaking to reporters to preview a trip by Pompeo to Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia this week, declined to comment when asked whether Pompeo would meet North Korean officials while in Singapore for a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this weekend.
