White stuff from tomb is world's oldest cheese

The world's oldest solid cheese has been found inside the tomb of Ptahmes in Saqqara, part of the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis.

Archaeologists have just discovered the most ancient and intact cheese that has ever been found anywhere in the world, and it was recovered from the Egyptian tomb of Ptahmes, the mayor of Memphis, after being left there 3,200 years ago.

Should archeologists unearth ancient crackers that'll pair well with sarcophagus juice and diseased cheese, all we'll need is a ouija board for the ultimate cursed game night.

The peptides detected by these techniques show the constituting material was a dairy product obtained by mixing sheep/goat and cow milk.

And while the sample retrieved by Greco's colleagues may be old, others have discovered traces of ancient cheese or yogurt (the two can be hard to distinguish) that long predate even the recent finding, Kindstedt said.

For thousands of years beneath Egypt's desert sands a solidified whitish substance sat in a broken jar.

On Earth see the peak of the meteor shower of Perseids
According to the American Meteor Society lists 12 different annual meteor showers that will be visible on Earth. It is the largest object known to pass by Earth repeatedly.

It was initially unearthed in 1885, but got lost under drifting sands, and was then rediscovered in 2010. In one of the jars a "solidified whitish mass" was found together with a canvas fabric that may well have been once used to cover the jar's contents.

In a paper published in the journal Analytical Chemistry, the team of researchers from the University of Catania and Cairo University revealed that the mass appears to be a 3,000-year-old solid cheese. "For this reason we can say that it is the oldest solid cheese ever found to date".

Older samples discovered elsewhere were "more attributable to natural fermented milk like yogurt or kefir".

It's typically the result of eating unpasteurized dairy products. The discovery of the bacteria made the find all the more exciting for archaeologists-even if it makes the cheese itself an even more unappetizing prospect.

To date, only indirect signs of brucellosis have been discovered on Egyptian bones that date back to 750 BCE. Evidence also suggests the cheese contains the earliest reported sample of a potentially deadly disease, brucellosis, which spreads from animals to people.
