Air Niugini plane ends up in lagoon

Air Niugini plane ends up in lagoon

Jimmy Emilio, general manager of Chuuk Airport, said the plane landed about 150 yards short of the runway and the cause of the crash was unclear.

Boats are surrounding the partly submerged plane to rescue passengers and crew but other details are not yet available.

"Air Niugini can confirm that all on board were able to safely evacuate the aircraft", the firm said in a brief statement.

The passengers and crew were taken to hospital but no serious injuries were reported.

Air Niugini is Papua New Guinea's leading airline and flies to over 30 destinations both nationally and internationally.

In 2013, all 101 passengers aboard a Lion Air flight that overshot the runway at Denpasar in Indonesia and landed in shallow water were similarly rescued by boats without casualties.

Oil prices at four-year high with no supply boost in sight
The bank forecasts Brent and US benchmark WTI prices to average $85/Bbl and $76/Bbl, respectively, in the next six months. Major oil companies took some solace from OPEC's assurances. "The US is not capable of bringing our oil exports to zero".

The accident took place at the Chuuk worldwide airport on the Weno island of the South Pacific nation of Micronesia.

Local boat owners and rescue teams rushed to the aircraft to get the passengers out.

According to local news reports, the Boeing 737-800 was running according to schedule, stopping in Chuuk while on its way from Pohnpei, Micronesia to Port Moresby.

Papua New Guinea officials say investigators from the country will head to Micronesia.

It's now unclear what caused the crash.

He said he heard the aircraft and assumed it was a normal landing, but then he went back to his workplace and somebody told him the plane was starting "to go underwater".
