Duke starts to shut N.C. Brunswick nuclear plant ahead of Florence

Power outages from Hurricane Florence, which made landfall Friday morning in North Carolina and SC, have topped 945,000 customers.

DUK says it is following procedures and shutting Unit 1 and will start shutting Unit 2 at the 1,870 MW plant later today.

They sit 20 feet above sea level and four miles inland, she said, suggesting they're resistant to even the 13-foot ocean surge forecast for Florence.

Tropical Storm Florence dumped "epic" amounts of rain on North and SC as it trudged inland on Saturday, triggering unsafe flooding, toppling trees, cutting power to almost a million homes and businesses while causing at least five deaths. On its current track, the storm will hit the coast on Friday with maximum sustained winds of about 105 miles per hour.

Nuclear power plants have multiple and diverse layers of protection, including numerous mobile emergency pumps and electrical generators for backup power.

"All the nuclear power plants affected by Hurricane Matthew weathered the storm well and were well-prepared for the high winds and heavy rains", Joe Pollock, the U.S. Nuclear Energy Institute vice president of nuclear operations, told World Nuclear News in October 2016 after Matthew's impact.

"Those power plants are, one, obviously hardened".

The two reactors at the site, which entered service in 1975 and 1977, are of similar design to some of the reactors damaged at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan after an natural disaster and tsunami in 2011.

Speaking during a visit to Moscow less than an hour after the hurricane made landfall in North Carolina, Perry said "we've done this many times before".

A hurricane simulation exercise conducted by FEMA and the Energy Department this spring considered how to respond to damage at a nuclear power plant, according to The Associated Press, which first reported the exercise. Diesel generators, with at least seven days worth of fuel, must be on hand to take over, should the plant lose power from the local electric grid.

This, however, is a far different scenario.

In addition to all of this, the spread of pig manure into flood waters is also a concern. The storm will be the first major hurricane of the season and will show how the sector responds after a trio of storms tested utility systems in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico previous year - leaving some on the island without power for months.

Unlike many close decisions in boxing, though, there was no huge outcry, largely because the fight was nearly too close to call. He also made comments about how he felt Canelo ran in the first fight and did not fight like a Mexican.
