Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser Jailed

Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser Jailed

Former Donald Trump presidential campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, right, was sentenced to 14 days in prison Friday.

It's unclear if the conversation between Mifsud and Papadopoulos was part of Moscow's larger scheme to boost Trump's candidacy. He also said that Mifsud told him in April that the Russians had "thousands of emails" about Clinton - which Papadopoulos described as a "momentous statement" but not a direct offer of assistance. The exchanges came shortly after he joined Trump's campaign and months before US authorities learned that Russian intelligence officers had stolen troves of emails from Democratic political organizations.

US President Donald Trump reacted by taking an apparent swipe at the cost of the investigation into the former aide.

Papadopoulos defended himself and contradicted White House officials in a CNN special programme Saturday night, "The Mysterious case of George Papadopoulos".

Already at that time, Breen noted, Trump was calling the allegations of Russian interference in the election "fake news" and a "political witch hunt" - terms he continues to use for the Mueller probe.

"The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", Breen said.

The sentencing judge, U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss, agreed to allow Papadopoulos to surrender at a future date and to travel between now and then to NY and California, where his lawyer said he is considering relocating.

The investigation into alleged Russian interference in the USA elections has since been turned over to Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller.

Judge Randolph D Moss said the sentence could have been higher but he sensed "genuine remorse" from Papadopolous.

Papadopoulos's comments on "This Week" were his first in public since being sentenced Friday to 14 days incarceration, one year of supervised release, 200 hours of community service and a $9,500 fine.

But he said incarceration was necessary because Papadopoulos had lied on a matter of grave national interest and the public needed to understand that lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a serious matter.

Papadopoulos admitted that he lied to FBI investigators when they interviewed him on January 27, 2017.

His lies about the timing of his encounter with the professor, including the false claim that it came before he'd joined the campaign, prevented investigators from effectively questioning Mifsud when he was in Washington in February 2017, prosecutors said in a court filing. The Australian notified his government, which notified the United States. "But they got him, I guess, on a couple of lies, I guess that's what they're saying".

Papadopoulos' lawyers had urged Moss to sentence him to probation.

Out of the 35 people and entities so far charged, Papadopoulos is one of five who have pleaded guilty and will be the second to be sentenced.

The defense portrayed Papadopoulos as an eager campaign aide who was in over his head, and pushed back on claims by the prosecution that he had harmed the investigation.

DNC lawyers wrote in court filings Friday that Joseph Mifsud, who spoke to Papadopoulos during the 2016 presidential election, "is missing and may be deceased", Bloomberg News reported. "The message is for all of us to check our own loyalty, to tell the truth, to help the good guys".
