Ferrari claims 'boredom' was the real victor at Singapore Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton described Mercedes' performance at the Singapore Grand Prix as "monumental" for the team as he pulled 40 points clear of Sebastian Vettel in the drivers' championship.

Max Verstappen says he didn't want to take the risk on passing Singapore Grand Prix victor Lewis Hamilton when being held up by back markers during the race.

Meanwhile, Hamilton kept producing consistent laps with a clear track ahead of him and by lap 32, increased his lead over Verstappen to five seconds with Vettel another three seconds behind in third.

Sitting alongside Verstappen in the post-race press conference, Hamilton acknowledged he was vulnerable.

"I said before the weekend we can only beat ourselves, and we didn't get everything out of the package", he sighed. That was a tough race. That was a long race. "Felt like one of the longest races of my life", said Hamilton after his back-to-back win on the twisty streets of Singapore.

"He was screwing around the whole time, so I'm glad he got a penalty", Verstappen told Ziggo Sport. "I feel super blessed!" He even charged towards Hamilton, gaining two seconds a lap at some point, until he got very close.

"I think we know where we stand and I think we are going to be alright". "These guys were moving around". "These guys were moving around, it was quite hard to follow".

"I had a few driveability issues again behind the Safety Car and pulling away from the pit stop was terrible, but in the end we managed it well and got the result we wanted".

Woodward: Mattis, Kelly denials of his book quotes untrue
The former Goldman Sachs banker told Axios: "This book does not accurately portray my experience at the White House". But Woodward insisted his book was accurate and said he carefully vetted each description included in the book.

"But it was definitely close and my heart was in my mouth for a minute". We had a great start, the team have just never given up faith in me and in Valtteri (Bottas) and in our ability and it was a real blessing.

"I was a little bit unlucky with the traffic", said Hamilton.

"For example yesterday in long runs I didn't have a problem, and if it breaks it breaks, you can not really change that".

Vettel arrived in steamy Singapore 30 points behind the Englishman but with high expectations of clawing back ground on a circuit expected to favour his Ferrari.

Victory this weekend with Vettel finishing in third place means that Hamilton is now 40 points ahead in the drivers championship with six races remaining.

"The approach I have is working really well so don't see a point in changing, just need to keep getting better", he said. You already felt the draft from the cars when you're five, six seconds behind and the vehicle starts sliding a bit more.

"The only thing I can say is it was a great qualifying, I think the best I have ever done and also the auto was working really well. So I'll be staying the same".

Ricciardo has finished on the podium in the last four editions of the Singapore Grand Prix, including a hattrick of second places from 2015-17. By contrast, Vettel has two wins, a second, a third, a fourth and one retirement.
