Kyrgios defends umpire for controversial pep talk during win

Second seed and five-time champion Federer, 37, made it 18 wins in 18 second round appearances in NY by seeing off error-plagued Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

Mohamed Lahyani "went beyond protocol" Thursday, when he climbed down from his chair to exhort Kyrgios, the USTA said in a toothless statement Friday, in an apparent reversal of its party line the day prior, when it excused Lahyani's conduct.

"I'm not sure if I'm the guy who's supposed to pull him to the side. He just said that it wasn't a good look". Just the way he goes about things, I could take a leaf out of his book. He could be heard telling Kyrgios, "I want to help you", and, "You're great for tennis". "I want to help you", Lahyani said during the changeover.

"I don't think he (the umpire) has to go down and take the position of a coach".

"I haven't seen it, as I say".

"I don't go out at all". Down a set, and 0-2 down in the second, with a paying crowd watching on, he just couldn't be arsed.

In a statement, the United States Tennis Association said Lahyani "left his chair to check on the condition" of Kyrgios. "I get what he was trying to do".

Federer later confirmed a Saturday night showstopper with Kyrgios at Arthur Ashe Stadium - world tennis's biggest stage - with a 7-5 6-4 6-4 win over another Frenchman, Benoit Paire. "I was a little bit surprised", he said.

While he wasn't aware at the time what Layhani was saying to Kyrgios, he slammed the umpire and the USTA for letting it happen in an extraordinary statement released after the match. The American rarely saw eye-to-eye with umpires during his playing career, so it is somewhat surprising to see him react to the incident in this way.

Defiant Jose Mourinho defends record after Man United slump
He was similarly defiant when asked if that would still apply if he failed to win the championship with United . In his press conference after the Spurs defeat, Mourinho made note of his three Premier League titles.

And there is a unusual hypocrisy in the broader flagellation of Kyrgios, one led by the ravenous Australian media corps but echoed globally.

Yawning one second, Kyrgios delivered a return victor the next to break Herbert to get back on serve at 4-5 in the second before clinching the tiebreaker to draw level.

Kyrgios and Federer have met three times before, all in best-of-three-set matches, each of which went to a deciding tie-break, with Federer leading 2-1.

"It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair". It's a conversation. Conversations can change your mindset. I mean, the umpire in Shanghai didn't cop any backlash.

Of course we have seen this from Kyrgios before, but it's what happened next that really caused controversy.

"I felt like it's maybe one of these years where it could be hot", Federer said on Thursday. This is incredible because [for the first time] in 40 years I'm actually going to defend an umpire. A chair umpire should be neutral.

Umpire Lahyani agreed and his decision to leave his chair to speak with Kyrgios was queried by Herbert, who was swiftly dispatched once his opponent got in the zone at Flushing Meadows.

Germany's Zverev had suffered second-round defeats in his past two US Open appearances but the world number four avoided another early exit by downing Nicolas Mahut 6-4 6-4 6-2.

He then tweeted: "I shouldn't have tweeted so quickly after the match".
