Novak Djokovic leads US Open final

A series of missed forehands by del Potro in the tiebreaker put Djokovic back on course and he finished with a flourish, taking the last three games - sealing the title on his first match point.

Djokovic claimed his third US Open championship after a straight-sets victory over Juan Martin del Potro in Monday morning's (AEST) final. It's the Serb's 14th career Grand Slam singles title-tying Pete Sampras for third all time-and his second consecutive major win, as he triumphed at Wimbledon just two months ago.

The famously emotional Del Potro could not contain his emotions as he sat in his chair after the match and Djokovic made a point of consoling him.

Del Potro, the No. 3 seed from Argentina, advanced in Friday's other semifinal when defending champion Rafael Nadal retired from their semifinal because of a painful right knee after dropping the opening two sets. He had the upper hand in the second set tie-breaker but couldn't convert, and after fighting back from a break down in the third set he served up a double fault to give Djokovic a chance for the final break of serve.

Del Potro spoke this week about the low point, in 2015, when he considered quitting the sport.

"We are proud to be close to these legends", Del Potro said. It's not just like, 'Okay, see you later, I've got to go'.

He had grown frustrated by the pro-del Potro crowd that sang and chanted his name throughout the three-hour, 16-minute match as if it were a soccer game.

Djokovic also leads Del Potro 14-4 in their head-to-head encounters. It was even louder because of the closed roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium to keep out the rain.

This was Djokovic's third championship in NY, along with those in 2011 and 2015. He depended on his hometown friends, a group of whom have been in NY throughout the fortnight to lead cheers in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and worked his way back to the final at his favorite ATP Tour event.

Amid increasing noise between points and serves, which prompted frequent interventions from chair umpire Alison Hughes, the previously assured Djokovic - who missed the tournament past year due to an elbow injury - appeared agitated.

"To support of my loved ones, my kids, my wife, my team of people that has been there with me through hard times as well".

"I was hoping he's [Pete Sampras] going to be here tonight but I want to say 'Pete, I love you, you're my idol".

"You learn from adversity. when you have doubtful moments when things are not working out as you want (them) to".

"I believe he'll be here again with the champion's trophy".
