Rep. Lynch beats Democratic primary challengers Wu, Voehl

Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley has unseated ten-term incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano, in surprise upset in the Massachusetts Democratic primary Tuesday.

Ms. Pressley, the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council, challenged Mr. Capuano from the left and on style and identity, in a pattern similar to the upset victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez earlier this summer in NY.

If elected in November, she will be the first black woman to represent the state in Congress.

The win means Lynch, first elected in 2001, is virtually ensured another two-year term in the 8th Congressional District.

Pressley, 44, will become the first black congresswoman from MA.

Pressley enjoyed an endorsement from Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter.

Bednov was a senior commander in the Luhansk People's Republic, another eastern Ukrainian breakaway region that neighbors Donetsk. In February 2017 rebel commander Givi (real name Mikhail Tolstykh) was killed by a rocket that was sacked into his office.

Pressley's win was the latest in a streak of victories by younger, more racially diverse Democratic candidates against established rivals ahead of the November 6 election when Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in the House of Representatives to serve as a more effective foil to Trump's agenda. Pressley beat Michael Capuano, a 10-term incumbent, in Massachusetts' 7th District.

Tahirah Amatul-Wadud lost the state's 1st Congressional District to Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.).

The incumbent, who has held the seat for nearly 30 years, had a heavy financial advantage, raising $2.5 million through August 15 to Amatul-Wadud's $113,000.

Polls and political analysts predict the state's nine House of Representatives seats will remain in Democratic hands, along with the seat held by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a leading liberal voice often cited as a possible 2020 White House contender.

With 13 percent of precincts reporting, Keating led businessman Bill Cimbrelo 86 percent to 14 percent when the AP called the race. Tedeschi has some name recognition from his family's franchise of 200 convenience stores. But Inside Elections rates the seat Solid Democratic.
