Top White House economist fact-checks Trump on GDP claim

This time to tout his economic success, with the GDP growth rate hitting 4.2 percent for the last quarter and topping the unemployment rate of 3.9 percent, something Trump claimed "for the first time in 100 years".

If this statistic seems dubious, that is because it is categorically false; there have actually been 63 fiscal quarters across the past 60 years in which the unemployment rate was lower than the rate of growth for the gross domestic product, or GDP.

In fact, US GDP growth has been higher than the unemployment rate in several quarters during the last century, including, most recently, in 2006.

In his fiery speeches and Twitter blitzes, President Donald Trump has forcefully claimed ownership of the United States economy's vigorous health while denigrating the legacy of his predecessor Barack Obama, who was in office during most of the past decade's expansion.

The first two numbers are correct, although they measure completely different things, and in different ways. Trump went on to argue, "I guess I have a magic wand, 4.2%, and we will do MUCH better than this!"

"The notion that what we're seeing right now is just a continuation of trends is not super defensible", he said.

Analysts closely watched for pronouncements by Kim that could suggest a new challenge to the US or a willingness to compromise. Kim is emphasizing peace and the economy as a way to "create the momentum in the U.S".

Asked about the veracity of the statement later that day at a White House press briefing, Hassett said: "So I can tell you what is true. And usually the answer is, he doesn't have an answer", Obama continued.

In fact, Obama had been talking about manufacturing jobs - not economic growth - and had said, "He just says, 'Well, I'm going to negotiate a better deal.' Well- what - how exactly are you going to negotiate that?" The U.S.is now its 10th year of economic growth, and in its longest period of growth with 95 straight months of job creation.

This wasn't the first time Hassett has weighed in on a presidential tweet.

Recessions bookended the start and end of George W. Bush's presidency and marked the end of George HW Bush's.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie also took issue with Obama's attempt to blame America's divisions on Trump, calling it "richly ironic" for him to refer to Trump as a "symptom" of the divide. Trump said on Monday in a posting on Twitter.

"I think President Obama is a powerful reminder of what a presidential leader looks like, and that's a contrast to Donald Trump", Katie Porter, who is running to unseat California Republican Rep. Mimi Walters, told Politico.
