Trump Campaign Adviser George Papadopoulos Gets 14 Days in Jail

Trump Campaign Adviser George Papadopoulos Gets 14 Days in Jail

Prosecutors working for Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller said Papadopoulos undermined their investigation and deprived them of a chance to ask a professor of diplomacy based in London how he knew Russians had obtained the "dirt" on Trump's rival, Hillary Clinton, in the form of thousands of emails.

Russian Federation has denied USA allegations that it interfered in the campaign and President Trump denies campaign collusion.

"I made a awful mistake for which I paid dearly and I am terribly ashamed", Papadopoulos said in court.

Far from cooperating to energize the special counsel probe, prosecutors Jeannie Rhee, Andrew Goldstein and Aaron Zelinsky argued, Papadopoulos and his wife gave life to a false narrative about them and the seriousness of his offense.

Three other campaign officials - chairman Paul Manafort, deputy campaign manager Rick Gates and national security adviser Michael Flynn - either have pleaded guilty or been convicted of various crimes but none of the trio has yet been sentenced. He has been sentenced to 14 days in prison, plus a year of supervision and 200 additional hours of community service.

Judge Randolph D Moss said the sentence could have been higher but he sensed "genuine remorse" from Papadopolous.

"Caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation, Mr Papadopoulos misled investigators to save his professional aspirations and preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master", the statement said.

"I see Papadopoulos today", he told reporters aboard Air Force One. Mifsud left the United States and not returned, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation found him in the US on February 11, 2017, about two weeks after Papadopoulos's first interview. "I made a terrible mistake but I am a good man", he said.

The sentencing, coming almost one year after he pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents, ends an important yet mysterious story line in the examination of whether anyone from Trump's team conspired with Moscow to influence the presidential election. "While some in the room rebuffed George's offer, Mr Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr Sessions, who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it", they said in a sentencing memorandum, which requested probation for Papadopoulos.

"We don't talk politics", he said.

"The defendant did not provide "substantial assistance" " after that arrest, prosecutors wrote to the judge, "and much of the information provided by the defendant came only after the government confronted him".

Before the sentence was read, Papadopoulos' defense attorney, Thomas Breen, pointed fingers at Trump.

Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in a Pennsylvania prison and received a $20,000 fine.
