Twitter permanently bans Alex Jones and Infowars show for 'abusive behaviour'

It's official: Twitter has permanently banned conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his website Infowars.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) was giving an interview with reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday when he found himself suddenly accosted by InfoWars founder Alex Jones, who was in the building to attend a hearing on supposed Silicon Valley "censorship" of conservatives.

Jones was suspended earlier this year from YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms.

As part of the ban, Jones will not be able to create new accounts on Twitter or take over any existing ones. We took this action based on new reports of Tweets and videos posted yesterday that violate our abusive behavior policy, in addition to the accounts' previous violations.

The video in question showed Jones shouting at and berating CNN journalist Oliver Darcy for some 10 minutes in between two congressional hearings focused on social media. He'll also be banned from personally registering or operating any other Twitter accounts in the future.

The Republican senator was talking to reporters on Wednesday in a Senate hallway about social media companies' role in elections and the spreading and blocking of misinformation, while a man spoke over him and reporters. Dorsey testified at both hearings, but did not appear to witness the confrontation.

Jones is now being sued in Texas by two Sandy Hook parents, seeking at least $1 million (£0.77 million), claiming that they have been the subject of harassment driven by his programs. Jones is quoted as saying Darcy had "the eyes of a rat", and accused CNN of wishing to police the Internet.

Rubio grew angry when Jones patted him on the shoulder, and told Jones not to touch him again. But until now it had resisted muzzling Jones further.

Jones was live on Twitter's Periscope service the whole time.

Jones countered, "Oh, you want me to get arrested?"

Twitter's first punishment was minor compared to the repercussions that Jones and InfoWars faced from other tech companies just days before.

Jones is now active on Facebook; his suspension there recently expired.
