Umpire was not sexist - Serena Williams broke the rules

Depending on the person and the perspective, there were all sorts of ways of viewing and interpreting what went on between Serena Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the U.S. Open final.

"He alleged that I was cheating, and I wasn't cheating", Williams told reporters later.

She then had a heated argument with chair umpire Carlos Ramos, which cost her a game. When Williams approached Ramos the second time, for instance, she did not seem to be aware of her second violation, which means she was also not aware that she was one violation away from forfeiting a game.

Williams, who was seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, was handed a warning for a coaching violation before being deducted a point for smashing her racquet.

The Grand Slam Committee handed Williams a US$82,500 (S$113,200) fine and put her on two years' probation for an expletive-laced outburst at a line judge during her semi-final against Kim Clijsters.

Former Australian netball captain Liz Ellis told Sports Sunday that Williams may have tarnished her legacy after her epic meltdown. "We don't have any code, and I know that you don't know that and I understand why you may have thought that was coaching, but I'm telling you it's not. But then when I hugged her at the net.", Osaka explained as she began to tear up.

But as the boos and whistles rained down on the court during the awards ceremony, Williams resumed her role as the sport's leader, urging the fans to appreciate the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title. "I was like, 'Wow, this is not how I felt when I won my first Grand Slam.' I definitely don't want her to feel like that".

Williams did not recover in time to salvage Saturday's match, which Osaka won, 6-2, 6-4.

The victory made Murray, who won here past year with Martina Hingis, the first man to win consecutive US Open mixed doubles titles since Bob Bryan in 2003-04. Because the young player outplayed her in the first set, I think pressure got to her more than anything.

Osaka powers into semi-finals with Tsurenko thrashing
As Osaka has climbed the ranks in women's tennis, her identity has been the subject of curiosity for many tennis fans. She then flew to Miami, where she promptly dismissed her idol, Serena Williams , in a dominant first-round win.

Here's what the big-picture takeaway should be: Tennis needs a commissioner to oversee all aspects of the sport, someone to make sure there is consistency in the rules and the way they are applied.

Williams, meanwhile, though she still clearly feels wronged, isn't deluded about the outcome.

The rule book also states that players who receive coaching during a match or intentionally destroy a racquet shall be penalized in accordance with the point penalty schedule.

"You know how many other men do things - they do much worse than that". 'It doesn't really feel that real right now.

"The fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions and that want to express themselves and they want to be a strong woman".

She later accused him of sexism, saying: "He's never taken a game from a man because they said "thief". Williams told them the whole episode "is not fair", and said: "This has happened to me too many times". Williams argued the call and threatened the lineswoman that she would "shove this [expletive] ball down your [expletive] throat".

Meanwhile, Mouratoglou took to Twitter to also take aim at Ramos.

"I hope to continue and play here again, but we'll see", she said with a short, knowing laugh. She demands referee Brian Earley come on to the court. "It's because I am a woman, and that's not right".
