California becomes first state to require women on corporate boards

In order for a gender preference of this kind to be upheld, the state must show that governmental action is the best way to achieve the outcome, and that there's a governmental reason for pursuing it. It prevents internet services from slowing their speeds, charging extra fees for major websites, and preventing access to certain websites. The Justice Department also said the new bill goes against the federal government's "de-regulatory approach to the internet".

In response, the California attorney general and 21 other state attorneys general filed a lawsuit in January in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals seeking to invalidate the FCC rollback.

Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, signed a legislation Sunday that forces changes at California-based corporations by the end of 2019, making California the first state to take that step. "Once again the California legislature has enacted an extreme and illegal state law attempting to frustrate federal policy". The suit was filed on Sunday with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.

The Federal Communications Commission a year ago repealed rules preventing internet companies from exercising more control over what people watch and see on the internet.

The majority of Americans want the rules to return, and many states are attempting to legislate net neutrality.

Third woman accuses Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct
The news comes a day before Kavanaugh and his original accuser, Christine Blasey Ford , appear before a senate hearing. Women's March, for instance, created cancelkavanaugh.com as a resource for those who want to make their voices heard.

The U.S. Senate voted in May to reinstate the net neutrality rules, but the measure is unlikely to be approved by the House of Representatives and the White House also opposes it. "The law prohibits many free-data plans, which allow consumers to stream video, music, and the like exempt from any data limits".

State legislators began working on the bill when the Trump administration began to scale back net neutrality regulations previous year, with many Democrats viewing the legislation as a victory against the White House. An identical bill was introduced in NY.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra swiftly criticised the DOJ action saying the Trump Administration continues to ignore the "millions of Americans who voiced strong support for net neutrality rules, California - home to countless start-ups, tech giants and almost 40 million consumers - will not allow a handful of power brokers to dictate sources for information or the speed at which websites load".

"We've been down this road before: when Trump and Sessions sued California and claimed we lacked the power to protect immigrants. California fought Trump and Sessions on their immigration lawsuit - California won - and California will fight this lawsuit as well", Wiener said in a statement.

Hannah-Beth Jackson, a Democratic state senator who helped write the law, said a quarter of publicly traded companies in California don't have women on their boards.
