Google+ to shut down after security bug

Google also announced that, "we can not confirm which users were impacted by this bug".

The company revealed that the usage and engagement of Google+ is even lower than some might have guessed, as 90 percent of user sessions lasted less than 5 seconds. Ireland's data protection regulator told the press it was pushing for more information from Google regarding the breach.

Despite some news outlets focusing on Google+ shutting down, or on the data exposure itself, BuzzFeed News tech reporter Ryan Mac expressed that the real story was the company's response.

Google said it was unable to confirm which accounts were affected by the bug, but an analysis indicated it could have been as many as 500,000 Google+ accounts.

As Google only keeps two weeks of API logs for its Google+ service, it was impossible for them to determine if the bug was ever misused.

The Wall Street Journal broke the news of the software bug, reporting that Google chose to not disclose the problem "because of fears that doing so would draw regulatory scrutiny and cause reputational damage". Data security experts now estimate 500,000 users had their profile data exposed.

Google said the issue was resolved in March and that no developer exploited the vulnerability of the data per the company's internal review.

That nexus in reality is so powerful that it has potential to transform the global pathways for action on climate change . It also does not describe any risks except for destabilization of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, he said.

Google said it couldn't determine which users were impacted by this bug because the API was created to keep logs for only two weeks, and it didn't have access to historical data longer than that.

Google can not confirm which users were specifically impacted by this bug. The bug in the API allowed the developers to not just access the private, non-public data of the users who signed up as well as people they are connected to.

The internal memo obtained by the Journal says that while Google has no evidence that outside developers misused, it has no way to know for sure. "To give people a full opportunity to transition, we will implement this wind-down over a 10-month period, slated for completion by the end of next August".

More information will be available over the coming months, including ways that users can download and migrate their data.

The data involved was limited to optional profile fields, including name, age, gender, occupation and email addresses, and posts, messages or telephone numbers could not be accessed, a spokesperson said.
