India's teen batting prodigy Prithvi Shaw plunders West Indies on test debut

RAJKOT: Indian cricket has a new star after Prithvi Shaw became the country's youngest batsman to score a century on debut during Thursday's Test against the West Indies.

At the Day 1, Prithvi Shaw hit maiden century. He is the 293rd cricketer to represent India in Test cricket and at the age of 18 years 329 days Shaw became India's second youngest opener after Vijay Mehra, who was 17 years 265 days at Bombay's Brabourne Stadium against the Kiwis in Dec 1955. Barring Gabriel, the other bowlers failed to hit the right line and length to Shaw and that allowed the young batsman to play to his strength. Shaw got to his ton but Pujara fell for 86.

Prithvi Shaw first grabbed the attention of the world as a 14-year-old when he 546 off 330 balls for Rizvi-Springfield against D'Assisi High School in the Harris Shield tournament of 2013-14.

India had elected to bat in the first of the two Tests.

Shaw wasted little time in picking up where he had left off in the first session, twice drilling leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo to the leg side boundary in the first over after the interval.

Can in-form West Indies test India?

With the selectors looking ahead, it's up to the likes of Shaw, Agarwal and KL Rahul to seal their spots at the top of the Indian batting order ahead of the much-anticipated tour to Australia.

Pujara, playing on his home ground, was typically solid at the other end, waiting patiently for loose deliveries to pick up boundaries.

Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane (41) added 105 for the fourth wicket to continue India's progress before the latter was caught behind to off-spinner Roston Chase. He also produced a delightful straight drive on way to reaching his half-century which came off 56 balls.

He reached his 20th half-century in Tests off 100 balls and all told, has so far counted four fours in a 137-ball innings.
