Typhoon Trami to threaten lives and property in Japan

Typhoon Trami to threaten lives and property in Japan

Streets in the Okinawa prefectural capital of Naha were deserted Sept 29 as winds and rain from Typhoon No. 24 battered the island.

Some 600 people evacuated to shelters in Okinawa and electricity was cut to more than 121,000 homes, public broadcaster NHK said.

Kansai Airport, which is situated on reclaimed land offshore in Osaka and suffered extensive damage in a storm earlier in September, reopened early Monday after closing its runways the previous day as a precaution.

A woman in her 60s was missing in Miyazaki prefecture, southern Japan, after she was washed away in a paddy irrigation channel, according to NHK.

Images received by Stars and Stripes from around the island revealed devastation of all sorts: Flooding caused by storm surge along the coastline, damaged vessels, overturned vehicles, trees, power lines and branches blown down and buildings damaged and collapsed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday that it has not received reports of any Filipinos hurt as Typhoon Paeng pummeled western Japan.

It is expected to make landfall on Kyushu island on Sunday bringing heavy rains, strong winds and high waves.

FBI Charlotte tweeted that the investigation was ongoing, while a news conference is due to be held later on Thursday afternoon. FBI Supervisor Jason Kaplan said it is too early in the investigation whether foul play factored into Ritch's disappearance.

Typhoon Trami was the equivalent of Category 2 hurricane when it passed over the Ryukyu Islands late Friday.

The typhoon is projected to hit regions ravaged earlier this month by Typhoon Jebi, which caused landslides and floods and temporarily shuttered Kansai International Airport.

Some western regions are still recovering from Typhoon Jebi in early September, the most powerful typhoon to strike the country in a quarter of a century.

At least 51 people were injured in southern Japan.

Bullet trains running between the two western Japan cities of Osaka and Hiroshima will suspend operations on Sunday morning in anticipation of heavy rain and wind, operator West Japan Railway said on Saturday.

Trami, lost some strength after making landfall near Tanabe City, 450 kilometres south-west of Tokyo, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to downgrade it to a "strong" typhoon from an "extremely strong" one.

And last month, a magnitude-6.6 natural disaster rocked the northern island of Hokkaido, sparking landslides and killing more than 40 people.
