Trump administration blames North Korea for 'WannaCry' ransomware

A senior White House official claimed North Korea was responsible for a cyberattack that paralyzed hospitals, banks and companies worldwide in May.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Trump official claims in an op-ed that the U.S. has proof that it was North Korea behind the WannaCry cyber attack, citing a "careful investigation". But the shaming is created to hold North Korea accountable for its actions and "erode and undercut their ability to launch attacks", the official said. It also requires governments and businesses to cooperate to mitigate cyber risk and increase the cost to hackers.

Lazarus Group is widely believed by security researchers and USA officials to have been responsible for the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which destroyed files, leaked corporate communications online and led to the departure of several top studio executives. The attack forced the company to cancel the release of The Interview, a comedy about two reporters who were hired to assassinate Kim Jong-un. No indictments have been brought in the Sony case.

"The attack was widespread and cost billions, and North Korea was directly responsible", said Tom Bossert, homeland security advisor to United States president Donald Trump in an op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal.

Instead, Lack has told employees that the investigation would be handled in-house by NBC lawyers and human resources executives. The MSNBC spokesperson declined to specify the amount of the payment citing confidentiality, NBC News reported.

"Bossert goes on to say: "[WannaCry] encrypted and rendered useless hundreds of thousands of computers. while victims received ransom demands, paying did not unlock their computers.

FedEx's computer networks were among the most heavily hit.

What the point of this blame will be remains uncertain, other than piling on amid rising tensions with North Korea. Earlier this month, North Korea said it had successfully tested a breakthrough intercontinental ballistic missile that could place the entire US mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

Ahead of the claims about North Korea being responsible for the WannaCry attack, on Monday, the USA military released photos of massive joint drills it underwent recently with its ally South Korea, and have called the exercise 'Warrior Strike IX'.

Looking ahead, Bessert writes that the USA will take steps to curtail North Korea's "ability to mount attacks, cyber or otherwise".
