Rand Paul Says He Will Vote Yes on SCOTUS Nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Paul tweeted, "After meeting Judge Kavanaugh and reviewing his record, I have chose to support his nomination". "I won't make a final decision on the nomination until I complete a thorough and fair examination of his candidacy", the senator wrote, "just as I did with Neil Gorsuch", Trump's first nominee to the high court. "Each nominee, however, must be judged on the totality of their views, character, and opinions".

Paul's initial concerns over Kavanaugh involved the judge's record on privacy. United States, which broadly limited law enforcement's ability to monitor individuals using cell phone data without a warrant, as a "new precedent" leaving him hopeful that "Judge Kavanaugh will be more open to a Fourth Amendment that protects digital records and property". Schumer says Republicans apparently plan to request a "pre-screened subset of Judge Kavanaugh's record".

Last week, the Senator was undecided after meeting with Kavanaugh for one hour.

"As the senator from West Virginia, I have a constitutional responsibility to advise and consent on a nominee to fill Supreme Court vacancies and I take that responsibility seriously", he said in a statement.

Kavanaugh - an appeals court judge in the District of Columbia since 2006 - gave his views while dissenting in a ruling upholding a ban on semi-automatic rifles in the nation's capital.

Key players in US case versus ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort
The charges largely predate the five months Mr Manafort worked on the Trump team in 2016, some of them as campaign chairman. The prospect of Manafort being found guilty on all charges could mean he spends the rest of his life in prison.

The public is also split on the preferred timing for Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings, with 33 percent saying the Senate should consider him this fall, and 31 percent preferring that they wait until after the midterm elections on November 6. With the Senate control slimly held by Republicans 51-49, Democrats can't block Kavanaugh's nomination outright if Republicans hold together.

Mr. Manchin was the first Democrat to speak with Judge Kavanaugh, breaking with party leaders who urged a freeze on such meetings.

Manchin is one of a handful of vulnerable incumbent Democrats vying to hold on to his seat in the midterm election this fall.

After Manchin said he would talk with Kavanaugh, another red-state Democrat, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have vowed to take their time in evaluating Kavanaugh, and have both expressed concern that he might rule against Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision recognizing a woman's right to have an abortion. Republicans say the push for all documents related to Kavanaugh's time as staff secretary - a position that essentially has every piece of paper that heads to the President cross its desk - is unreasonable.
